Three questions almost nobody can answer about their own financial life

Three questions almost nobody can answer about their financial life:

1. If your income stopped tomorrow, how long could you live on what you already have?
2. Which day of the year do you stop working for the tax authority and start working for yourself?
3. At what point in your life will what you 𝘰𝘸𝘯 contribute more than what you 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯?

Most people can only answer it vaguely, leaving an uncomfortable follow-up: if we don't know our own position, how do we know whether we're spending our life on the right things?

Earning and keeping are different skills. We get decades of training in the first and almost none in the second. Nobody teaches you to answer these three, and the information you'd need is scattered around.

Developing your financial skills, e.g. 'keeping/managing' your wealth is one of the best investments people can do.

Take the third question for example. There's a point in most people's lives where assets start contributing more than salary. Some reach it early. Others never do. Very few know where they are on that curve.

Let's take pension as an example. For most people it's the largest thing they own after their home. But they can't tell you what it's invested in, what it costs each year, or how it performed last quarter.

Imagine a bank account you could only check once a year, that gave you one number with no breakdown. Nobody would tolerate that for a month. Yet that's the arrangement many of us have for the thing our last 1/3 of life depends on.

However, it isn't only the pension. Our whole financial life is fragmented across bank apps, brokerages, pension providers, property and paperwork that don't speak to each other. Every year it gets messier.

Would we act differently if we knew the answers? Whether we could already afford to work a bit less, go freelance, spend more time with family? As the saying goes, you only live once.
