Financial stress ages your heart like smoking does

⚠️ Financial stress ages your heart like smoking does ⚠️

Mayo Clinic cardiologists found that people under financial strain showed accelerated heart aging and higher mortality risk, on a par with smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes (link in comments). What makes it different from other stress, as Dr Leana Wen put it to CNN, is that "financial strain is often chronic and ongoing"

But the good news is that it's fixable with a few simple steps (see recommended steps below)

Financial stress isn't necessarily caused by not having enough money - rather by lack of visibility and overview, what it's costing you, how you can best leverage what you got, whether you'd be alright if something went wrong. It's the uncertainty that causes financial stress.

So why doesn't anyone know where they stand?

Because most people's financial life is fragmented, and nobody was ever commissioned to be on your side. The bank adviser recommending the bank's own products. The broker whose commission comes from the lender. The insurer selling you the policy they underwrite. Each shaped by their own agenda.

So you have been left to assemble it yourself, from statements you don't read, embedded costs you don't understand, and jargon meant to confuse.

Not knowing where you stand isn't an acceptable default. It's not only costing you money; it's costing you sleep, high blood pressure, and years in your life.

👉 Recommendation: Three easy steps you can take today:

𝟭. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄. Every account, asset, debt, what comes in, what goes out. Not to fix anything yet, just to see it. Most people have never seen their whole financial life on one screen, and the first time is usually less frightening than the imagining was. Visibility is first step.

𝟮. 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. The manual spreadsheet updates at midnight, the six logins, the mental note to check something on Thursday. That's real cognitive load carried every week, for information that can simply stay current on its own.

𝟯. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹. How many months could I cover if income stopped? What am I paying in fees? If X happens, what are my options. Plan B and C looks like this.

That's the mental relief.
