European tax complexities have reached new heights

I run a fintech company, and I still can't fully work out my own tax bill in Spain.

Taxes in Europe have got so complex that figuring out what you actually owe is starting to look like the math behind a slot machine.

France runs 348 separate taxes. The UK 90, more than at any point since 1834. Belgium 112. Denmark 132. Spain 88. And those figures only count the taxes. Each one then carries its own web of reliefs, deductions and exemptions: 1,180 in the UK, 467 in France etc. comes on top.

Take Spain's income tax. On paper, one tax (out of 88). In practice, 17, because each region sets its own brackets, deductions and reliefs. Then it splinters again by your circumstances: married or single, one child or three, a mortgage, a disability, dependent parents, your age, your income band.

So one salary doesn't produce one tax bill. Run the maths and you land on millions of different versions of the "same one tax".

No human can hold all of that in their head. Not even a good accountant, not all the time, because it keeps changing month to month.

The system only works one way: Underpay, and the authority fines you. Overpay, or miss a relief you were owed, and nobody calls.
